In the spotlight today at Dar Leone, our debut collection of Sierra Leonean country cloth throws and blankets will soon be available in our online shop and through our stockists. In the meantime, we thought we'd give you a preview of this heritage cloth from Sierra Leone.
Country cloth is still hand woven on traditional looms although contemporary versions are crafted of super soft wool. The appearance is dramatically different in my view from the cloth I remember as a child but just as compelling. The technique of weaving in strips and then hand sewing the strips together remains the same but the textiles have changed. Long gone are the traditional dyes of indigo and locally grown cotton. In their stead, imported wool or cotton.
Dar Leone blankets and throws are only of the softest wool and guaranteed to be a hit this winter. We salute our local producers in Freetown and Makeni and applaud their efforts at keeping our history alive.
